Henrik Fisker, who recently relaunched his namesake car company, today unveiled what he hopes will be a competitor to Tesla. Called EMotion, it’s an electric sports car that will achieve a 161 mph top speed and a 400-mile electric range.
While the EMotion is still in its early stages—the reborn Fisker, Inc. was only launched a few weeks ago—Fisker announced a few details today that suggest the vehicle is not designed for everyday commuting. In an interview with Top Gear, Fisker described it as “technology-laden” and said it will be expensive, probably “somewhere in the size and price range of our closest competitor.”
Inside, Fisker claims that the EMotion will have more space than its closest competitors and more rear legroom than many full-size luxury sedans. That’s thanks to both a long wheelbase and a new type of electric powertrain layout that pushes the vehicle’s entire passenger compartment forward.
A graphene-based battery will power the electric motor, the result of a partnership between Fisker and California-based Nanotech Energy. Graphene batteries are environmentally friendly and offer lightening-fast charging: according to Nanotech, a graphene smartphone battery can charge in a few seconds.
Fisker didn’t announce when deliveries will start, but it does plan to show off the first EMotion in mid-2017. That’s about the same time that Tesla’s mass-marketModel 3 is expected to go on sale.
Fisker knows he won’t be able to take on with Tesla with just an expensive sports car. So he’s already looking to a second vehicle to compete more closely with the Model 3. He told Top Gear that it will be “a very high volume and lower cost mass-market model.”
