The European Central Bank’s (ECB) has tapped ING’s global director of payments, Evelien Witlox, as the program manager for its digital euro, effective Jan. 1, 2022.
- In her new role, Witlox will work alongside the senior management team of the Directorate General Market Infrastructure and Payments.
- Witlox will work on the ECB’s investigation phase of the project which will run until October 2023. The aim of the project is to address key issues regarding design and distribution of the digital euro which must be able to meet the needs of Europeans while at the same time helping to prevent illicit activities and avoiding any undesirable impact on financial stability and monetary policy, the ECB said in a press release.
- The ECB has outlined a roadmap for the digital currency and is currently in the process of examining whether to introduce a central bank digital currency (CBDC) for retail payments.
