Glassnode Flags Key Supply Test for Bitcoin at $86K

Bitcoin’s surge above $86,000 has brought the cryptocurrency directly into a price zone that has been described as a critical test for the market.

BTC touched a high of $86,502 as of Tuesday, Sept. 22 (5:30 EDT), after gaining more than 10% from the previous Sunday’s close, according to Bitstamp’s price tracker. Spot buying strengthened during the move, while short liquidations helped accelerate Monday’s rally.

That price matters for more than chart watchers.

1.07 Million Bitcoin Sit Inside the Zone

According to Glassnode’s latest Market Pulse, it is estimated that roughly 1.07 million BTC were acquired between $83,000 and $86,000, with most belonging to long-term holders.

The largest concentration sits around $85,000, and that supply had barely moved during the 30 days covered by Glassnode’s analysis.

Investors who bought there are now approaching breakeven after spending months underwater. That creates the potential for renewed selling as bitcoin returns to their entry prices.

Yet the data also offer a bullish counterpoint.

Glassnode’s Sell-Side Risk Ratio had fallen to just 7 basis points, less than half its August peak of 16 basis points. Long-term holders accounted for only 47% of realized profits, down from 88% around the August high.

Bitcoin ETFs Reach Their Breakeven Line

The same $83,000-$86,000 region carries particular significance for institutional investors. The bitcoin ETF complex had remained below that level for 228 consecutive sessions, with aggregate unrealized losses reaching about $18 billion at their February low.

Bitcoin’s recovery therefore pushes a major institutional cohort back toward profitability. This comes as bitcoin ETFs saw almost a billion dollars in inflows on Monday, Sept. 21 with trading volumes of over $4.5 billion.

A Break Above $86K Could Trigger the Next Battle

Derivatives markets make the zone even more important. Glassnode found that short-liquidation levels between $82,000 and $86,000 had expanded 21% since the Aug. 19 squeeze. A sustained move through $86,000 would push bitcoin through one of the densest modeled short-liquidation areas in the market.

Nicolai Sondergaard, senior research analyst at Nansen, said the durability of the move will depend less on derivatives momentum and more on whether spot buyers and ETF investors follow through.

“Aside from external macro numbers, I want to see sustained spot and ETF flows,” Sondergaard said. “If we see that, it is much more likely that prices will hold from here on up. Without this, it will be another predominantly perp-led move that is more susceptible to sell-offs and real-world events.”

He added that $87,000 is the next level to watch if bitcoin can hold above $85,000, followed by the psychologically important $90,000 mark and another potential resistance area near $92,000.

That makes $85,000-$86,000 more than another round-number milestone. It is where long-term holder supply, institutional cost bases, and leveraged short positions collide. Bitcoin has finally reached the wall. The question now is whether buyers can turn it into support.
